State and local officials are hosting several meetings next week to update the public on plans to improve I-35 in Pflugerville and North Austin as well as on Burnet Road and North Lamar Boulevard.

I-35 project updates

The Texas Department of Transportation is hosting an open house Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Walnut Creek Elementary School, 401 W. Braker Lane, Austin, near Lamar. The public will be able to hear updates to the agency’s Mobility 35 program to improve I-35 from SH 45 N to Grand Avenue Parkway in Pflugerville as well as at the I-35 and Parmer Lane intersection.

In Pflugerville, TxDOT plans to spend about $3.2 million to reconfigure entrance and exit ramps on northbound I-35; build an extended auxiliary, or merge, lane on northbound I-35 under SH 45 N; and construct extended entrance and exit lanes on the northbound frontage road.

At Parmer, the agency is planning $25 million worth of improvements, including:

  • replace the intersection with a diverging diamond intersection, in which vehicles cross to the left side to allow left-turning and through traffic to pass through simultaneously

  • add a southbound bypass lane to allow through traffic to avoid the intersection at Parmer

  • reconstruct two entrance and exit ramps at Parmer

  • build right-turn lanes at the intersection of Lamar and Parmer

  • construct dual left-turn lanes from Parmer to Lamar

  • improve bicycle and pedestrian accommodations

An online open house is Dec. 6-20 at www.mobility35openhouse.com.

City of Austin corridor reports on North Lamar Boulevard and Burnet Road

In 2010, Austin voters approved a mobility bond that funded corridor studies on North Lamar between US 183 and I-35 and on Burnet between Koenig Lane and MoPac.

In 2012, voters approved another bond allocating $15 million to put toward improvements identified in the corridor reports, such as adding sidewalks to eliminate gaps in the network. The city’s recent mobility bond passed in November will also provide funding for future projects on Burnet and Lamar.

Since 2012, city staffers have worked to prioritize projects and are updating the public about their progress. Two open house events are planned to allow residents to hear what’s being planned for the two roadways:

North Lamar Boulevard
Wednesday, Dec. 7 from 6:30-8 p.m.
ARC Community Church, 305 Deen Ave., Austin

Burnet Road
Thursday, Dec. 8 from 6:30-8 p.m.
Northwest Recreation Center, 2913 Northland Drive, Austin
