2. Exhibits’ opening reception In “Thinking of Home,” Asian-American artist Sherry Xiao explores her desire to belong to the presumed Asian-American identity using elements of Chinese calligraphy. In addition, the Asian American Resource Center presents the community art project, “Word Play,” in which children from the community created and displayed artworks using Chinese words. Refreshments are provided.

3. Women’s self-defense class In honor of Stalker Awareness Month, participants learn to develop self-awareness and focus as a form of self-defense.

5. Youth Fishing Derby The Texas Army National Guard and Camp Mabry host the third annual event for children age 16 and younger. The derby is open to military and civilian families for a day of fishing for rainbow trout. Tackle and fishing poles will be provided. Participants may bring their own lunch, and food vendors will also be onsite. Registration is limited, and interested participants should register online.

6. WORTH THE TRIP: Fifth annual Purgatory Trail Run The annual event is open to walkers, hikers and runners and includes a 10-mile and a 5K course. The 10-mile course leads runners through a porous section of the Edwards Aquifer. More experienced trail runners can experience technical sections of the trail during the race. The 5K course is rigorous enough for beginners to more advanced trail runners. Runners and walkers receive a T-shirt. Dogs are not permitted.

7. Martin Luther King Jr. Day festivities The annual community march celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy while highlighting diversity and multiculturalism in the city. The event begins with a short program at the Martin Luther King Jr. statue at the intersection of 23rd Street and Speedway Avenue, followed by a march to the Texas Capitol and Huston-Tillotson University. A festival includes vendors, local musicians and businesses. Marchers are encouraged to bring canned goods or nonperishable food items for the Capital Area Food Bank.
