WHAT WE REPORTED The inaugural class of The University of Texas Dell Medical School in Austin began studies July 5. School officials have said they hope a new teaching hospital, Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, will anchor a health service and research district in downtown Austin.

THE LATEST Dell Seton Medical Center is about 80 percent complete and on track to open May 21. It will take the place of University Medical Center Brackenridge, which will close for Central Health, Travis County’s health care district, to be able to redevelop the property with a private developer who has not yet been chosen.

WHAT'S NEXT The $310 million hospital will be equipped with several technological innovations, including a mobile navigation system for patients and visitors as well as special cameras inside operating room lighting arrays that will be able to broadcast medical procedures to students at Dell Medical School. The hospital will have 211 beds, including 42 emergency beds, and 13 operating rooms. Seton Healthcare Family expects the new hospital to be the region’s only Level I trauma center and provide a safety net of care for uninsured and underinsured Travis County residents.
