The Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at Sugar Land debuted its newest breast cancer screening service this fall with 3D mammography.

The service, also known as low-dose radiation tomosynthesis, allows physicians to access clearer images and more accurate screening results, especially when examining women with dense breast tissue.

“Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology improves the ability to detect breast cancer at the earliest stages, while using the lowest radiation exposure available in the market,” said Dr. Stephen Phillips, medical director of the Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at Sugar Land.

The 3D mammography service is the only breast tomosynthesis system approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to Houston Methodist officials. The new addition will further expand the health system’s arsenal of breast cancer medical services, which includes molecular breast imaging, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, ultrasound biopsies and MRI-guided biopsies.

“We are thrilled about offering our patients this low-dose alternative,” Phillips said. “New technology helps our fight against breast cancer.”
