As of mid-September, the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas is more than 90 percent of the way to its goal of raising $22.5 million for a new distribution facility, which is under construction in East Austin.

The nonprofit received a Topfer Family Foundation grant of $100,000 on Sept. 15.

The nonprofit, which is headquartered at 8201 S. Congress Ave. in Southwest Austin, announced its latest campaign in fall 2014 to fund
construction of the 135,000-square-foot facility. The new center would be able to distribute double the amount of food that CAFB currently handles, according to CAFB President and CEO Hank Perret.

CAFB began construction in June and has $1.6 million left to raise in order to receive the $500,000 Mabee Foundation Challenge Grant it applied for, Perret said. The deadline to raise the remaining funds in order to secure the Mabee Challenge Grant is Jan. 15, according to the CAFB.

The facility is slated to open in summer 2016, and the nonprofit plans to sell its South Congress building, Perret said.
