The iconic Yellow House in downtown Magnolia will soon be transformed with a new tenant.

Popular Cypress burger joint The Shack signed a 10-year lease in mid-June to open its third location at the property on Commerce Street near FM 1774, said Pat Zaiontz, member of the Magnolia Planning and Zoning Commission.

“We think The Shack will be a great anchor for The Magnolia Stroll with more restaurants to follow,” Zaiontz said. “It’s a destination restaurant.”

The Shack owner Joe Duong said he plans to begin renovating the Yellow House within the next few weeks and hopes to open the new restaurant in October. The Shack offers a family-friendly atmosphere with a variety of specialty burgers made fresh to order that range from $8 to $12 as well as craft beer, Duong said.

The Shack opened its first location in 2011 along Cypress Rosehill Road. The restaurant’s most recent location opened July 11 in the venues formerly housing P.O.s Burgers and the Cypress Saloon at 12170 Telge Road.

“The Magnolia location is going to be the same menu and the same concept," Duong said. "It’ll be no different than the locations over here in Cypress."

The new Magnolia restaurant will most likely offer a children’s play area, live music and on-site food trucks similar to the Cypress locations, Duong said.

Earlier this summer, Duong said he stumbled across a Craigslist advertisement for a fire truck in Magnolia that he purchased for the children’s play area at his second Cypress restaurant. Once in Magnolia, he noticed the Yellow House was vacant and decided to sign a lease soon afterward, he said.

“It’s the kind of the atmosphere we like, and it’s the environment we like with lots of families,” Duong said. “We cater to families and kids, so it’s definitely a good fit.”

In 2011 the Yellow House was donated to the city of Magnolia and transformed into home-style restaurant Montgomery County Grille. After two years it was sold and renamed The Old Yellow House Cafe in April 2013. The cafe closed after a few months and was vacant until The Shack signed its new lease.
