Greg Ellis, owner of Groovers’ Paradise Record Shop in The Oasis shopping center, 6550 Comanche Trail, Ste. 213, Austin, opened the shop April 8.

“There’s a lot of great record stores here already,” Ellis said, mentioning vinyl record stores Waterloo Records and Antone Records in Austin. “I have to figure out where I fit in.”

Along with many classic vinyl records and some newly printed records, the store sells posters, CDs and other items Ellis believes vinyl record collectors would enjoy, he said.

“It’s a place [where] I want people to feel like they can come spend one or two hours on a Saturday, because that’s how you want to look at records,” Ellis said. “I hope that we get a group of people in here who appreciate having a [record store] closer to home.”

Ellis said he wants Groovers’ Paradise to serve as the premier record store for the Lake Travis area.

“We want people to come out here for more than the sunset,” he said.

Ellis’ retail career in the music industry began at age 14 when he worked as a clerk at a record store in Jackson, Mississippi, he said. A move to San Marcos brought him a job with Sundance Records. Eventually he landed at The Oasis when its owners said they wanted a record store in the area, he said.

“I’m enough of a hippie to think things are all tied in together and happen for a reason,” Ellis said. “There’s definitely that vibe around this project here.”
