The Cedar Park Center may have better visibility from drivers before the Texas Stars hockey season begins this fall after Cedar Park City Council approved a bid to install a sign by Toll 183A.
City Council approved the construction bid of $498,249 during council’s June 25 meeting.
Garrett Bonn, project manager with the Cedar Park Department of Engineering, said the city originally planned to build the sign when it built the entertainment venue, which opened in September 2009. But only this year did the arena’s new manager, Northland Properties Corp., and the city agree to split the cost to install a new sign by the Toll 183A access road, Bonn said.
Northland and the city agreed to spend a total of $400,000 on the sign but raised the maximum cost after construction bids for the sign surpassed the original figure.
The city will own the sign and will receive a 50 percent reimbursement from Northland. The sign will include the name “Cedar Park” along with dual LED marquees facing each side to announce events, Bonn said.
Northland bought the arena management along with the Texas Stars hockey team and 17 acres surrounding the center from previous owner Hicks Cedar Park LLC, in a deal that closed at the end of 2014. However, the city of Cedar Park owns the arena. The city also has a tax-increment reinvestment zone on the 17 acres. City leaders have said they hope the zone will draw a new hotel, restaurants and retail to the site and create an entertainment district in the city.
The project will take about three months to complete.
