ADOPTING A PET?

“A lot of times people want to adopt from breeders, but shelter dogs are great dogs. They have their own little quirks sometimes, but most of them that I have found are better than dogs I’ve purchased from breeders. These dogs here are great and want love.”

—Karen Pitcock, director of Abandoned Animal Rescue in Tomball

Questions to consider before adopting

Karen Pitcock, director of Abandoned Animal Rescue in Tomball, answered some questions that potential pet owners should ask themselves before adopting.

Have you ever had a dog/cat before? What happened to that animal?
“We’ve had people come in wanting to adopt a dog because they got bored with their cat and were going to get rid of it. We’re not going to give those people a dog.”

What kind of hours do you work?
“If you’re working 60 hours a week or traveling a lot, a puppy probably won’t be [a] good [match] for you. But if you have a dog door, maybe we could place an older dog that is a bit more trained and can be on its own in a yard.”

Can I be patient enough for a dog or a cat?
“Sometimes [after adoption] it takes a while [for the animal] to come out of its shell. You never know how they’re going to adjust, but you have to have patience.”
