Elackatt said his decision to withdraw from the May 9 general election stemmed from his belief in term limits for councilmembers and elected officials. Missouri City does not have defined term limits for its elected officials.

"It's an ethical issue for me," Elackatt said. "I have always been a proponent of term limits and I feel that, as much as I love serving my city, it would be hypocritical for me to seek another term."

Elackatt was first elected to Missouri City City Council in 2009 after garnering 57 percent of votes and has served as the District C representative for six consecutive years. During his tenure in City Council, Elackatt was involved with various infrastructure projects and the development of the city's new recreation and tennis center.

"I am older, hopefully wiser and it is my sincere desire that I have done exactly what the people of Missouri City elected me to do," he said. "I would also like to think that over the past six years I represented the voices of the residents in District C in an honorable, cooperative and visionary manner."

Elackatt will remain on City Council until May 18 when newly elected councilmembers and officials are sworn in. The deadline to file an application for place on ballot was Feb. 27, which leaves Anthony Maroulis running unopposed for District C. Maroulis currently serves as a member of the city's parks board.

"[Maroulis] is a good man, an intelligent guy and a great fit for District C," Elackatt said. "I felt that this would be a good time for me to step aside, take a break, and let some fresh eyes step in."
