A new elementary school in north Austin is looking for a name.

Austin ISD's board of trustees is inviting members of the school district community to submit nominations for what to name what is now known as North Central Elementary School No. 2, located at 2011 W. Rundberg Lane.

AISD school board trustee Ann Teich said the school should have a name that reflects the diversity of the neighborhood. Students usually research the person that the school is named for at some point during their education there, so she thinks the namesake should be someone they can look up to, she said.

"That's what I will be looking for when we are taking in names ... diversity and someone who reflects characteristics that we would value in an upstanding citizen," she said.

Scheduled to open in August, the school now known as North Central Elementary School No. 2 is being built to help alleviate some overcrowding. The deadline to submit nominations is March 16 at midnight, according to a district news release.

AISD broke ground on the campus in 2013 and is retrofitting a former warehouse for the school .

The school board is scheduled to take action in April on the name for the school.

Another campus, the North Central Elementary School No. 1 opened as the Janis Guerrero-Thompson Elementary School in fall 2013.

In 2013, the board discussed changing a requirement that a person must be deceased for 18 months before being considered as a school's namesake. Teich said some members of the community had suggested naming the North Central Elementary School No. 1 for Cpl. Juan Navarro, who was killed while serving in the military in Afghanistan in 2012, but his death did not meet that requirement at the time the school was named.
