Hops & Grain Brewery is building a bigger tap room to accommodate more guests at its East Austin headquarters.

The new tap room at 507 Calles St. will accommodate approximately 100 people, more than five times the capacity of the original taproom. Construction could be complete by the end of November depending on inspections and the permitting process.

Tap rooms provide breweries an outlet to showcase their products to customers. Texas law prohibited beer sales on brewery premises until this past legislative session. Austin zoning at the Hops & Grain location still prevents beer being sold on premises, a technicality the company is working with the city to change, according to a spokeswoman. In the meantime, Hops & Grain sells souvenir glasses that include 1–3 complimentary fillups.

Once given the OK by health department inspectors, the brewery will finish out the tap room bars and begin moving in tables made from the same barrels Hops & Grain uses to age their beers. Board games and other entertainment will be available for patrons.

Hops & Grain, which celebrated its two-year anniversary Oct. 7, is responsible for Alt-eration, a German-style pilsner malt; Pale Dog, an American pale ale; and The One They Call Zoe, a dry-hopped German lager. In September, the company also began sampling new experimental beers in its tap room.

The existing tap room remains open 2–8 p.m. Thu.–Fri., noon–6 p.m. Sat.–Sun. throughout construction. The brewery also offers 45-minute tours at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each Saturday. www.hopsandgrain.com
