The City of Kyle is scheduled to hold a special runoff election June 1 between Chad Benninghoff and Joe Bacon for the City Council District 3 seat after neither candidate earned a majority share of the vote in the May 11 general election.

Benninghoff finished with 45.89 percent of the vote, and Bacon received 42.21 percent. Bill Sinor is out of the race after finishing in third place with 11.9 percent of the vote.

Benninghoff said his plan for the runoff election includes stepping up his door-to-door and community-outreach efforts.

Benninghoff's brother, Philip Duran, was killed while jogging after an alleged hit-and-run incident April 28. Benninghoff said he believes he is ready to return to the campaign.

"When that occurred, my campaign pretty much stopped," Benninghoff said. "I didn't do a thing. I intend on initiating that plan that I wanted to execute."

Bacon said he was not surprised by the results of the general election.

"We've been planning for a runoff," Bacon said. "When we got the numbers, we made some phone calls on Sunday morning and made plans to continue our campaign. We're trying to talk to the voters about the issues, and we're trying to make Kyle a better place."

Early voting begins May 20 and will take place at Kyle City Hall. On election day, voters can vote at City Hall and Wallace and Chapa middle schools. The District 3 seat is an at-large position, which means every registered voter within city limits can vote in the election.
