The Texas Workforce Commission delivered a $345,413 Skills Development Fund grant check Jan. 24 to Austin Community College to provide job training for two area employers—baked goods company Otis Spunkmeyer Inc. and technology business Ultra Electronics, Nuclear Sensors & Process Instrumentation.
Kathy Walton, grants compliance officer for ACC, said the grant was awarded in June and will be used to train 253 workers in the manufacturing, project management, auditing, and maintenance engineering fields through ACC's corporate training and continuing education programs.
Representatives from Otis Spunkmeyer Inc. and NSPI told Walton they are excited for their employees to gain new skill sets through ACC's training. Workers who complete the Corporate Training Solutions program receive nationally recognized certification, Walton said.
In addition to Otis Spunkmeyer and NSPI, ACC is training workers with four other employers, including St. David's Hospital and Texas Disposal Systems.
Walton said Donald Tracy, ACC's director of continuing education in business and marketing, frequently visits with companies to identify needs in the workforce and to submit Skills Development Fund grant proposals.
