The county celebrated National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day with a short ceremony May 8 at the Williamson County Courthouse at 710 S. Main St., Georgetown.

National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, which is commemorated May 9, focuses on the resilience of young people, especially those who have mental health challenges.

Two young women from area school districts shared artwork and poetry related to mental health at the ceremony. Their work and other projects was on display in the courthouse on May 8.

Regina Cavanaugh, a child and adolescent psychiatrist with Lone Star Circle of Care, was the keynote speaker. She talked about what parents and adults can do to become role models to children.

The event, entitled "Heroes of Hope," recognized the adults who work with and mentor children.

During the Williamson County Commissioners Court regular meeting that followed the ceremony, commissioners approved the creation of a subcommittee of the Williamson County Mental Health Task Force for children and youth called the Williamson County Children and Youth Behavioral Health Subcommittee.

"We decided there was some separate issues with youth and mental health, and we wanted to focus on that," Commissioner Lisa Birkman said.
