The New Braunfels City Council unanimously approved a plan July 25 to address needed pavement repairs along Klein Road from Walnut Avenue to FM 1044.

Contractor Lone Star Paving already began work on the project. Their $2.5 million contract with the city includes a $200,000 contingency and is meant to address about 75% of the repairs needed following pavement failures in Phase 1 of the Klein Road Project, according to a press release.

The contract is meant to address failures of an earlier effort by another contractor, J3 Company, which is based in San Antonio. The company's work on Klein Road was halted in the fall of 2021 due to roadway failures on parts of the road they newly repaved, as previously reported by Community Impact Newspaper.

Phase 1 was part of the 2013 bond program approved by voters, and in 2018 the city entered a $7.16 million contract with J3 Company.

Prior to halting construction, the city hired a third-party engineer to assess the company’s work and determined the failures were a result of J3 Company's construction work, and the city began working with the company to correct the issues. Discussions between the entities were ongoing for more than a year, according to the city.

A settlement agreement between the city and J3 Company was approved by council in April.

During the new work phase, drivers will detour into adjoining travel lanes and turning lanes, and can expect minor delays.
