Four sections of Cedar Park streets will receive some pampering based on information presented to Cedar Park City Council members during their meeting Thursday.

In November 2015, a bond election approved $6.2 million to be used toward asphalt overlays in the city as part of the Arterial and Collector Overlay Improvement Project.

“An overlay is a road rehabilitation process whereby the old asphalt is removed and new asphalt is put in,” Senior Engineering Associate Zeferino Mendoza said.

Mendoza said the money was approved for a three-year time period and that staff recommendations for projects to be implemented in 2017 include four roadways with a recommended expenditure of $2.04 million. The recommended roads include:

  • Buttercup Creek Boulevard from Nelson Ranch Road to Bell Boulevard

  • Cluck Creek Trail from West Park Street to Cypress Creek Road

  • Nelson Ranch Road from Buttercup Creek Boulevard to Cypress Creek Road

  • Cedar Hills Boulevard from Lakeline Boulevard to Bagdad Road

To formulate these decisions, the city conducted a pavement condition survey in 2014 that ranked all roads for pavement distress information. This, along with traffic volume and the ages of the roads, was considered in staff recommendations, Mendoza said.

He said all of the roadways being recommended for asphalt overlays in 2017 were built in the early to mid-1980s and have had minimal maintenance over the years.

“I can’t believe Cluck Creek has never been redone,” City Council Member Cobby Caputo said. “Back in the day, it was how everybody got north and south through the city.”

City Council members did not take action on the recommendations at Thursday’s meeting but are expected to hear bid proposals for the projects on July 13.
