Lakeway voters should know by early next week whether or not the city is bound for a new police station.

“The Mayor [Joe Bain], acting as the supervisor of the recount, determined that the petition [for a recount of Proposition 1 to fund a new police facility in Lakeway] is in compliance with Chapter 212 of the Texas Election Code and notified the petitioner [of the recount request] this morning,” Lakeway City Manager Steve Jones told Community Impact Newspaper.

Jones said the recount, by state law, must occur within seven days of the petition's certification.

He said the recount is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the Travis County Elections Division,  5501 Airport Blvd., Austin.

"We do not know how long it will take to complete," Jones said.

A committee of four or five individuals appointed by the city’s mayor will perform the recount and will provide a report as soon as the recount has been completed, Jones said.

The members of the Recount Committee are Phil Thompson, Richard Drury, Bob Neighbors and Steve Zbranek, he said.

The recount is closed to the public except for the petitioner, her representative(s) and some members of the city staff, Jones said.

“If the vote changes, even if it still passes, we have to recanvass [the results] and a 30-day waiting period [starts on the new recanvassing date] before a bond can be issued,” Jones said.

If the vote recount does not show a change from the May 6 election tally, the process that began with Monday night’s canvassing of votes continues and the 30-day waiting period restarts from May 15, he said.

Proposition 1 passed by a total of nine votes—modified from an initially reported eight votes—on May 6.
