The boutique-style shop specializes in antique and vintage pieces from Europe with a certain charm, owner Deborah Sierra said. “I look for items from Europe and all over the world that are chic, edgy [and] have charm and character for your home,” she said. Gypsies Antiques carries a variety of items from flatware to furniture. The store also has a boutique in the back that carries casual and evening dresses, hats, purses and shoes. Sierra said she tries to go back in time as far as possible when choosing new items to put in the store, but doesn’t stock anything that is more recent than the ’70s. “We find things that are pretty, items that you would see in [store fliers] like ‘Pottery Barn’ but real. I want the real thing,” Sierra said. Gypsies is also the go-to place for repurposing or making over furniture, she said. The business sells Milk Paint and CeCe Caldwell Paints, both of which add an aged look to pieces, Sierra said.

For 20 years, Antique Gallery has been a destination for shoppers who are looking for a large piece of wooden furniture or the perfectly jeweled bauble. With 30,000 square feet and 167 booths, it is hard to determine a specific style the gallery has, Manager Melody Morgan said. However, nothing from the ’80s or newer makes it into the store. Recently Morgan said she has noticed teacups, saucers and old broaches are the hot purchases because brides and hostesses are looking for these to add retro flair to an event. The gallery also sells to movie and TV production companies that film in Austin, such as the newest Transformers movie, “Age of Extinction,” and TV show “Revolution.” Morgan said shoppers should allow themselves at least two to three hours to wander the air-conditioned building. The store’s busiest days are Saturday and Sunday.

Downtown Bastrop, located about 30 miles east of Austin, offers several antique shops within walking distance of each other. Art lovers can appreciate the collection found at Lost Pines Art Bazaar, which offers Persian rugs, art and European furniture dating back to the 17th century, said Gallery Manager Naseem Khonsari, whose father, Kazem, started the business out of his love for Persian rugs and antiques. “He has always appreciated antiques,” she said. “He picks all the pieces.” Khonsari said the 6,000-square-foot showroom has items at a variety of price points. She said the store recently started selling items by Europe 2 You, which repurposes 19th century European timber into kitchen items, such as knife blocks and cutting boards.

Owner Jessica Lee Miller specializes in restoring pre-1950s art and selling antiques at her business, White Morpha Fine Art Restoration and Gallery. Miller said she previously worked with the late art restorer George Attal at Austin Galleries on Sixth Street in Austin. She now focuses mainly on restoring oil paintings from the 1700s and later. Most antiques in the shop predate the 1960s and include home decor, lighting and furniture that has been upcycled, meaning an item has been repurposed for reuse or a new use.
