Leander ISD staffers are moving forward with plans to build the district's 25th elementary school on Municipal Drive in Leander.

LISD director of Capital Improvements Jimmy Disler updated the school board about the project Jan. 23. He said if progress continues, construction could start in July on the school, with an anticipated opening in summer 2015.

City and school staff met in January to begin addressing traffic and drainage concerns in the area of Municipal Drive, Disler said. LISD has other nearby facilities including administration offices, the Leander Extended Opportunity Center and Leander Middle School.

"We just went through and identified issues that will be brought up and need to be addressed," Disler said. "It's dealing with traffic, Municipal Drive—rebuilding that road, and the possibility of drainage. We gave them very preliminary site plans with some drives trying to redistribute traffic to South West Street and also Municipal Drive."

Before the school opens, Municipal Drive will be extended west to connect South West Drive and Bagdad Road. Disler said district staff will continue to work with the city to meet its deadline.

"We will continue to meet with them to iron out everything," he said. "I told them our goal is to be under construction by July, so we need to identify everything very quickly to get [the school] open by summer of 2015."

Leander City Manager Kent Cagle said district and city staffers are still discussing how to share the cost of completing Municipal Drive.

"We are talking to LISD about it, but we don't have any split determined at this point," Cagle said.
