Kyle City Council voted Tuesday night to rezone a piece of land that could be the future site of Lidl, a German grocery store.

In April, representatives of Lidl, a discount supermarket chain based in Germany, requested to have just over 4.5 acres of land on the northeast corner of Marketplace Avenue and S. FM 1626 be rezoned from multi-family residential, "R-3-3," to be classified as a retail service district.

The site is across the street from H-E-B Plus, Target and Kohls. City staff supported the rezoning “without reservation,” Director of Planning Howard Koontz said.

City Council unanimously approved the agenda item, so it passed on the first reading.

Council members traditionally base zoning votes on area use instead of specific potential businesses or companies, but Council Member Daphne Tenorio, Place 6, said what many Kyle residents are probably thinking.

“It’s crystal clear to say it’s a grocery store,” Tenorio said.
