City of Lakeway dignitaries dedicate marker to commemorate original 1870 site of Liebelt Cabin

The Lakeway Heritage Commission dedicated a historical marker Oct. 4 at the original location of the Liebelt Cabin.

The structure, built around 1870, served as a post-Civil War-era log home. The marker is located a few yards away from the High 5 entertainment center, on an interior road in the Oaks at Lakeway shopping center.

The cabin was repaired in June 2011 with funds donated from the local Sears store. In November 2011, it was relocated to near Lakeway City Hall from the tract now known as the Oaks at Lakeway shopping center.

The property was originally issued to a German immigrant named August Liebelt who, according to city of Lakeway records, was born in October 1832 and immigrated from Germany to New Orleans before settling in 1870 on 80 acres of land in what is now the Lakeway area.

Left turn ban onto Reveille Road lifted

City Council lifted an upcoming ban on left turns for eastbound traffic on Bee Caves Road onto Reveille Road on Oct. 26. The proposed ban was expected to be enforced from
7-9 a.m. during the Bee Caves Road construction project.

The ban was an attempt to reduce cut-through traffic as a safety measure for residents on Reveille during the project, Council Member Darin Walker said. However, business owners at the Market at Westlake shopping center  said their patronage would suffer with the reduced access to the plaza, and the council changed its course, he said.

“I’m certainly sympathetic to residents concerned about safety and speed, but given the impact to the businesses, I think we absolutely have to support them,” Walker said.

Mayor Pro Tem Stan Graham said about half of the traffic he observed turning left onto Reveille Road on an average morning went into the shopping center. The other cars were most likely cut-through traffic, and the city will look at other traffic-calming measures for the road, he said.

Extension to West Village project granted Oct.25

Following a conference in executive session following its regular meeting Oct. 25, Bee Cave City Council granted developer CCNG’s request for a six-month extension to file its West Village project zoning application that includes 1,200-1,460 apartment units and 450,000-660,000 square feet of retail, office and commercial space.

The project is planned for the south side of West Hwy. 71, west of RR 620, in Bee Cave’s extraterritorial
jurisdiction.

The extension means a decision on the zoning application will be made by council by April 24, Council Member Kara King said. However, the extension is conditioned on CCNG completing its zoning application by Jan. 24.

“[CCNG] submitted an application already, but it’s not fully complete; [it is] missing items,” King said. “Staff can’t evaluate it until the application is fully completed.”

Lower Rollingwood Park closed for repairs

Safety repairs to the rock wall at the lower Rollingwood Park will force the area’s playground and pavilion to close for about two months. Construction will take place from Nov. 9 through the end of December, weather permitting. The upper Rollingwood Park playground will remain open.
