1. Volunteers are needed for the 2017 Keep Austin Beautiful Clean Sweep on Saturday, April 8. More than 130 service projects are expected to take place, and volunteers are sought to help with street cleanups, a creek restoration project and other community service projects. 2. On March 22, Austin Community College was named a national "Voter-Friendly Campus" by national nonpartisan organizations Campus Vote Project and Student Affairs Administrators of Higher Education. ACC was given the title for its efforts to break down barriers and empower students with information and tools to participate in the political process, according to a news release. ACC's efforts to improve voter turnout include holding voter registration rallies, voter registrar workshops and early voting locations.

An hours-long debate last week over proposed East Austin development Austin Oaks led to city council members offering changes that include more affordable housing, trip caps and tree preservation amendments. Due to a petition signed by 27 percent of surrounding property owners, the proposal needs at least 9 votes from the dais for approval of the third reading of the zoning case.

4. Congress Avenue Kayaks is celebrating its fifth season in business with one-day discounts on hourly rates. From 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday, the locally-owned business will offer a special kayak rental rate of $5 for a one-hour paddle on Lady Bird Lake, along with a free floatie key ring while supplies last. Congress Avenue Kayaks is located at the Waller Creek Boathouse at 74 Trinity St.

5. Two more trains have joined the fleet of Capital Metro trains. Each train consists of two cars and an engine car. They arrived last week and are expected to start running in five or six months.
