A community of yogis are now practicing in Austin a style originated in Canada called Modo Yoga.

The new Modo Yoga Austin studio is located at 7010 Easy Wind Drive, Ste. 130,in the Midtown Commons complex next to Crestview Station. Studio directors Meghan McCracken and Gillian Brockett opened the business Jan. 1 after moving to Austin and unable to find a community already practicing the modo style.

"The modo series leans toward yoga therapy. They make sure that spinal health, joint health and alignment are paramount and top priorities," McCracken said. "It's something you could do safely everyday for the rest of your life and never experience issues."

Classes are either 60 or 90 minutes long in a heated room and are offered six times a day. In March, McCracken said they plan to expand offerings to host nine classes each day.

McCracken said she understands yoga is expensive and never wants to have to turn someone away, so Modo Yoga Austin offers interested students a way to work off membership fees. If a student works four hours each week helping with duties such as greeting guests or cleaning, he or she can then attend unlimited classes for free.
