The Missouri City City Council authorized in September an agreement with WCA Waste Corporation to provide competitive rates for residential, commercial and recyclable materials collection service.

“The city has been trying for the last few years to get the city a single trash contract,” Mayor Allen Owen said. “We were successful in coming up with a contract for the entire city, which is good because the city does not want to get into the garbage business.”

Previously, every subdivision in Missouri City had its own solid waste contract, and they all carried different fees. The city’s new seven-year contract with WCA becomes effective Jan. 1 and will provide a $12.50-per-household base residential rate, Owen said.

Starting Dec. 1, WCA will begin delivering a 65-gallon gray recyclable cart and a 95-gallon blue solid waste cart to every household.

The new contract includes cost savings for residents, curbside recycling, automated garbage collection and quieter trucks that run on compressed natural gas, Owen said.

As a result of the city’s new trash and recycling service, Owen said the city will close its recycling center at City Hall on Jan. 1.
