More than 15 inches of rain fell in some areas of Houston during that timeframe causing high water levels in area creeks, according to the National Weather Service. Water levels in Spring Creek south of The Woodlands remained high midday April 20 at 101 feet, just above the flood stage of 95 feet.
As water levels begin to recede, there are a number volunteer and relief efforts underway in Montgomery County to help anyone affected by the floodwaters.
Officials with the Montgomery County Food Bank are asking for $10 donations to aid in recovery and relief efforts. Pressing needs include water, easy-to-eat meals, single-serving meals and basic hygiene products. Individuals can make donations online at www.mcfoodbank.org or via text message, sending the letters MCFB to 45777.
Volunteers are also needed at the food bank to sort incoming items. To sign up for a volunteer shift, send an email to [email protected].
A local nonprofit—Interfaith of The Woodlands—is also assisting in relief efforts. The organization is accepting non-perishable food items, clothing, bottled water, and household items at its office at 4242 Interfaith Way. Donations may also be made online at www.woodlandsinterfaith.org.
There are several shelters being operated by the Red Cross throughout Harris and Montgomery counties, including the following local sites:
- South County Community Center, 2235 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands
- First United Methodist Church, 4309 West Davis St., Conroe
The shelters are open 24 hours for area residents forced to leave their homes due to flooding. Volunteers are needed to help staff shelters and distribute food. Those interested in helping can call 713-313-5419 or visit www.redcross.org/volunteer or www.redcross.org/donate.
Local business GenuWine Tasting Room is also collecting donations for the community. Individuals can bring non-perishable food items, toiletries, clothing in good condition, clean linens and towels, toys and small household items to the business at 6503 FM 1488.
Just south of The Woodlands, Craft Grill in Tomball is also hosting a fundraising effort from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. April 25 at 25219 Kuykendahl Road, Ste. G110. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of all sales that day to the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Region in Houston. For more details, visit www.facebook.com/CraftGrill.
