Montgomery County has several events residents can take part in over the next few weeks that bring attention to breast cancer awareness month, which began Oct. 1.

Between 2009-13, the average annual count of breast cancer cases in Montgomery County alone was 309, according to State Cancer Profiles. Statewide, there were 14,574 cases and 224,504 nationwide. It is estimated that approximately one in eight U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime, according to www.breastcancer.org.

Here are a few local events Montgomery County residents can participate in to bring awareness to breast cancer:

  1. HerScan comes to The Woodlands


HerScan medical traveling team will bring affordable ultrasound breast screening to women of The Woodlands on Tuesday. The screenings take only 15 minutes, no prescriptions are required and all tests are read by a board certified radiologist. HerScan does not accept any Medicare, Medicaid or any third party insurance. 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (by appointment only). $195. This celebration of breast health awareness event on Wednesday will include complimentary mini-makeovers, manicures, massages, hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Hosted by Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, the event will also feature a physician Q&A panel session, a tour of the breast care center and education of breast health. On-site screening mammography will also be available. 6-8 p.m. Free (registration required).   1. In the Pink of Health luncheon


Memorial Hermann The Woodlands will host the 16th annual luncheon Oct. 14 featuring keynote speaker Samantha Harris, an Emmy-nominated TV host and breast cancer survivor. Since its inception in 2001, the annual event has generated more than $4 million, benefiting breast and ovarian cancer research and support. Lone Star Family Health Center offers free cervical and breast cancer screenings for uninsured women ages 21-64 on Oct. 18. Patients will enjoy refreshments and learn more about community health while waiting for their screening results. 7:30 a.m. (registration check in), 8 a.m.-noon (screenings), 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (health education).
