Conroe ISD board members were presented 74 suggested names for high school No. 6 and 72 suggested names for a new elementary school during a Tuesday board meeting. The board asked during a July 19 board meeting for public input on naming the two new schools being constructed in the Oak Ridge feeder zone. “We had just a little under a month for collection of names,” CISD Deputy Superintendent Curtis Null said. “We had 173 different people participate in the naming of the new high school and 126 suggestions came in for [the elementary school].” Some suggestions for the new high school, which must be named after a geographic region according to district policy, included Benders Landing, Grand Oak Ridge, Hardy Toll Road, Harmony, Imperial Oaks, Legends Landing, Oak Creek, Rayford Forest, Riley Pines and Spring Creek. Elementary school name suggestions ranged from nationally known figures, such as President Barack Obama, JJ Watt and John Cena, to locally known figures, such as the late Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth, CISD Superintendent Don Stockton and longtime Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Gage. Spring resident and Olympic gymnast Simone Biles was a suggestion that also made the list. “When [we] read the reason why people put names on that list, it’s touching,” Null said. “It speaks to the amount of great people that live and work here and that have made a difference in the lives of everyone around them.” CISD board members will further discuss names for the new elementary and high school during next month’s board meeting Sept. 20.
