Katy ISD officials donned football helmets and overturned some dirt at a groundbreaking ceremony for its second football stadium Feb. 5.

“Why do we need a stadium,” KISD Superintendent Alton Frailey asked a crowd at the ceremony. “Because folks are moving to Katy in droves.”

KISD officials plan to complete the $57 million stadium before the start of the 2017 football season. The stadium will have an estimated 12,000 seats as well as space for the athletic department and other administrative purposes.

The district also owns Rhodes Stadium—with 9,800 seats— and Frailey said he anticipated the additional stadium would reduce the number of Thursday night games.

Frailey said that aside from athletic events, the stadium will also support KISD’s fine arts programs by hosting band competitions and drill team events.

“The community looked at it, thought through it and said, ‘you know what, we truly do want the best for our kids,’ so they said yes,” Frailey said.

He also said the stadium would help generate money locally.

“We’re looking at adding about $500,000 a year, at least, in revenue because of this facility,” he said.
