Drivers of electric or hybrid vehicles now have more options to charge their cars at Katy Mills mall. The EVgo Freedom Station at the mall expanded the number of charging standards in December.

The EVgo Freedom Station is located near H&M, adjacent to Entry 6, and features three parking spots with several standards of charging for plug-in and hybrid electric cars.

Jeremy Desel, director of communications for NRG EVgo, said the station now offers the CHAdeMO and DC Fast Combo standards of charging as well as the traditional Level 2 charging standard.

“We offer that ability to quickly get a full charge,” Desel said. “It is a nearly full charge in 30 minutes. All [electric vehicles] no matter what standard can be charged at the station.”

Desel said there are two types of electrically-powered vehicles, traditional hybrids such as the Chevrolet Volt and also fully electric plug-in vehicles like the Nissan LEAF, Kia Sol, and BMW i3.

The EVgo station at Katy Mills is the first station in the Houston region to have both the CHAdeMO and DC Fast Combo standards available at one charging station, Desel said.

Customers can choose from several payment options for the charging service, including a monthly subscription fee or an “on the go” option that charges by the kilowatt, Desel said.

Some electric vehicles include several years of free charging with purchase and those memberships are honored at the station. Drivers with a Tesla electric plug-in vehicle can use the station, however a special adapter is required.

Katy Mills General Manager Don Massey said the electric charging station is a “triple win” for customers because it is convenient, fast and good for the environment.

“We’re proud to offer the first charging location in the Greater Houston area equipped to charge any electric vehicle on the road today,” he said. “This amenity underscores our commitment to delivering a more sustainable shopping experience that is also convenient for our guests.”
