Renae Mitchell and Vernagene Mott won the Pflugerville ISD board of trustees places 3 and 4 seats, respectively, in the May 7 election. Mitchell, the challenger, beat incumbent Mario Acosta with 57.43 percent of the vote, or 1,914 votes, compared with Acosta's 42.57 percent of the vote, or 1,419 votes. Mott, the incumbent in place 4 who has served on the board since 2004, received 54.04 percent of the vote, or 1,753 votes, compared to challenger Matt Robertson's 1,491 votes.

Mott said she appreciates the support of the voters and wants to sit down with Robertson to further hear his ideas.

"I think there's a lot of work going forward," she said.

In the race for Place 3 on the Pflugerville ISD board of trustees, challenger Renae Mitchell leads incumbent Mario Acosta with 55.83 percent of the votes, or 1,096 votes, according to unofficial early voting results released May 7. Acosta has 44.17 percent of the vote, or 867  votes.

In another board race, incumbent Vernagene Mott is ahead in the race for the Place 4 seat with 54.75 percent of the vote, or 1,049 votes. Challenger Matt Robertson has 45.25 percent of the vote, or 867 votes.

Place 3
Acosta, who works at the Texas Education Agency, said his top issues for the campaign were managing growth as well as providing competitive salaries for educators. Mitchell, a developer, ran on a platform of getting educators to teach to individual learners as well as providing job training in the classroom.

Mitchell said after the early results were posted that they are encouraging.

"I think my first priority [if elected to the board will be] to sit and listen and see what the board is faced with and hit the ground running and make sure the kids are well-taken care of and the teachers are well-taken care of," Mitchell said.

Place 4
Mott, who has been on the school board since 2004, said her top issues for the district were completing the 2014 bond projects on time and under budget as well as attracting quality educators. Robertson said his top issues for the district were keeping up with population demands as well as technological changes in the district.

Mott said May 7 after the results were posted she is glad people voted and the voters have shown support for her.

"There are challenges ahead of us, but my experience will lend itself to helping me make good decisions and lead the group," she said.
