A question for City Manager Odis Jones

A $53 million bond proposal has been proposed. What are your thoughts?
We’ve got a lot of questions to answer. $53 million is a lot to put on the backs of taxpayers. I’m a conservative guy. The council will need to be truly engaged.

Big decisions made in 2016

  • In January, City Council issued a no confidence vote in City Manager Karen Daly. Daly resigned June 2, and the position remained open until December, when Jones was hired.

  • The city of Hutto formed a bond committee to make a proposal to City Council. The committee came back in December with the breakdown of a $53.6 million proposal.

  • In October, City Council approved its first SmartCode project, Brooklands, which will include 608 houses with a mix of commercial and green space built in. The city’s goal is to bring more commerce to build tax revenue opportunities and improve the process for developers.

Top issues for 2017

  • Improving customer service: Jones said the city needs to meet the demands of its customers and build a foundation for growth, not allowing growth to manage the city.

  • Public safety, from police department needs to the fire and rescue needs, will be addressed.

  • A robust marketing plan will be built.

  • The city will work with the Hutto Economic Development Corp. to acquire land and bring new commerce and industry to town.

  • The discussion regarding a bond election will continue at future meetings to put the issue on the ballot.
