The city of Austin is planning updates to a library in Oak Hill, and members of the community are invited to attend a presentation May 17 at 7 p.m. to learn more about the project.

Renovations are slated to take place at the Austin Public Library’s Hampton Branch location at 5125 Convict Hill Road. City documents indicate construction was scheduled to begin in early 2016 and wrap up by September. However, the timeline has been delayed, library spokesperson Kanya Lyons said. The branch library meeting room is slated to remain open for reservations through the end of 2016, and construction could begin by early 2017, Lyons said.

Changes at the site could include replacing the existing roof, adding skylights, changing the interior layout, making technology improvements, and updating the heating, cooling and plumbing systems. The city also aims to replace some furniture, fixtures and equipment to ensure those and other updates are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Details about how the renovations will affect the library's hours and potential closures will be released when available, Lyons said.

Voters in November 2012 approved six city bond propositions totaling nearly $307 million. About $13 million was dedicated to improvement projects at library, museum and cultural arts facilities, and about $1.3 million was earmarked for the Hampton branch renovation project, according to city documents.

The Hampton library opened in 1997 and was named for Austin civic leader Will Hampton. More information about local library locations can be found in Community Impact Newspaper's recent guide to Southwest Austin-area libraries.
