Round Rock ISD trustees approved an academic calendar last week for the district's 2017-18 school year, which includes several changes from calendars in years past.

Classes will begin Tuesday, Aug. 22, following the third Monday of the month. In setting the start date, RRISD used its newfound freedom as a district of innovation and took an exemption from Texas’ uniform start date for schools, which mandates classes cannot begin earlier than the fourth Monday in August, according to the Texas Education Code.

RRISD trustees approved the calendar Feb. 16.

Trustees at another Northwest Austin school district, Pflugerville ISD, recently approved their 2017-18 academic calendar.

RRISD officials also moved back the start of the district's winter break to the fourth week in December. Winter break for 2017-18 will run from Dec. 25 -Jan. 5. Students return to class on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

The district also lengthened school days for all schools, adding extra minutes to allow for better flexibility in planning any inclement weather delays or cancellations during the year, according to RRISD.

School hours next year will be:

  • Elementary schools: 7:40 a.m.-2:55 p.m.

  • Middle schools: 8:20 a.m.-3:35 p.m.

  • High schools: 9:05 a.m.-4:20 p.m.
