A subcommittee of the West Lake Hills City Council has been formed to study traffic concerns on North Peak Road in West Lake Hills.

Mayor Linda Anthony said at the April 13 City Council meeting North Peak Road residents had concerns about speeding, particularly around the blind curve where families with young children live.

“It’s becoming such a problem now for us that it’s something that needs to be addressed,” said North Peak resident Robin Hammond. “People gain speed to get up to the top of the hill and they are just plowing through by the time they get there.”

Council members Beth South and Brian Plunkett volunteered to be part of the subcommittee, along with Hammond, Becky Combs and Jules Elkins, who also live on North Peak.

City Administrator Robert Wood said the subcommittee typically gets together and decides how they would like to gather data on the roadthrough a radar machine or a neighborhood survey, for instance.

After gathering data, the subcommittee recommends to City Council its potential solutions, such as reducing the speed limit or adding speed humps, Wood said. Council members may choose to move forward and enlist the help of the city engineer, who will create a formal plan for the traffic calming measures.

“So far, in every situation where there’s been some concern raised by the neighborhood, something has been done,” Wood said.

The radar machine is currently being used to track traffic on Redbud Trail after citizens approached City Council in March with a similar request.
