Houses with mid-20th century-style architectural design will be built in Leander after City Council approved a planned unit development for a 5.69-acre property Dec. 4.

Starlight Village at 1001 Horizon Park Blvd. will feature up to 40 single-family condominiums ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 square feet. Developer DH Homes is still designing the floor plans, and no construction start date has been set, said Mike Kopecky, who represented the landowner during the Dec. 4 meeting. Home prices are expected to be less than $200,000, he said.

The PUD, designed to offer flexible zoning and subdivision standards, allows the developer to build homes with architectural features and materials that vary from the city's existing requirements. For instance, at least 40 percent of each home will be constructed using masonry, which is less than what Leander typically requires. The homes will also not have attached, enclosed garages.

"I think it's creative and brings in a different housing type," Councilman David Siebold said. "I like the creativity, so I don't want to limit [the developer] from being able to meet the design [goal]."

The PUD was approved with a 6-2 vote, with Mayor Chris Fielder and Mayor Pro Tem Jason Dishongh voting against the rezoning.
