Construction on the shared-use paths across from the Longhorn Dam took another step toward completion. The 8-foot-wide path along the east side of the South Pleasant Valley Road was completed June 27.

The Austin Transportation Department now moves on to the 12-foot-wide shared-use path along the west side of South Pleasant Valley Road. With the west side of the road closed for construction, a trail detour will guide people biking and walking to the shared-use path on the east side.

As a part of the project, the transportation department also added two pedestrian crossing beacons, which are signals that activate when a pedestrian pushes a button to cross the street. Those lights are located at Krieg Field Drive and Canterbury Street and will serve as the crossing points for the detour.

The total cost for the project is $2 million with funding coming from the 2016 mobility bond.

The project is on schedule and will be completed by the fall, according to a transportation department spokesperson. Once the shared-use path on the west side of the bridge is finished, the city will create pathway connectivity to the Butler Hike and Bike Trail in addition to adding new street markings and signal upgrades.
