Round Rock ISD is soliciting input on who should attend a new elementary school at 2800 Sauls Drive. Public hearings will be held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at Bluebonnet Elementary School and  7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at Wells Branch Elementary School. The meetings will focus on the new school’s proposed attendance zone.

At an Oct. 15 RRISD board of trustees meeting, Bob Cervi, the district’s chief operations officer, proposed an attendance zone for the district’s 34th elementary school. The proposal would cut Wells Branch attendance in half, from 130 percent utilization rate down to 65 percent.

The new school would take a smaller portion of Bluebonnet students who live south of SH 45 N, bringing the school down to 105 percent utilization from 111 percent.

The new elementary school would open at 57 percent utilization, with about 522 students, according to the district.

Cervi said the staff tried to incorporate existing boundaries, such as SH 45 N, and tried to keep neighborhoods lumped together. Administrators also had to balance the population of economically disadvantaged students and English language learners, he said.

District administrators may recommend changes to the proposal based on input collected from the public hearings. The board can modify the attendance zone proposal at its Nov. 19 meeting, where it will also discuss name recommendations for the new school.

At its Dec. 17 meeting the board is expected to vote on an official name and finalize the attendance zone, according to district officials.

Officials expect the new facility to open in time for the 2016-17 school year.
