TxDOT has installed new signs along I-35 to show driver's real-time data[/caption]

The Texas Department of Transportation has installed three travel-time signs along the I-35 corridor—southbound signs in Georgetown and Round Rock and a northbound sign in Buda. The new signs, which will be active Oct. 27, will provide comparison travel times for I-35 and SH 130.

“Drivers now have the ability to make a route decision based on real-time travel data,” Austin District Engineer Greg Malatek said in a statement. “With I-35 in Central Texas being one of the most congested highways in Texas, we have to keep looking for ways to manage traffic throughout this corridor. The incorporation of these travel-time signs where we’re using technology to move people and goods more efficiently is a step in the right direction.”

According to the statement from TxDOT, the goal is to show real-time data to show drivers which route is more effective. The statement says sensors along each road will collect the data to be displayed on the signs.

The new travel-time comparison signs were funded through a $250,000 Federal Highway Administration grant, according to TxDOT. Installation work was performed through the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, in cooperation with Highway Intelligent Traffic Solutions, N-Line Traffic Maintenance and Skyline Technologies.
