The McKinney Police Department will hold entrance exams at 8 a.m. Oct. 10. The first 300 applicants will be tested and must apply by Oct. 5. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, 30 semester hours of credit from an accredited college and a grade point average of at least 2.0 as well as two year’s full-time military experience or law enforcement experience.

All new recruits begin in the department’s patrol division. Officer duties include but are not limited to the following:


• Enforcing traffic and parking laws
• Participating in community policing activities
• Participating in mandatory and elective training, including firearms and defensive tactics
• Patrolling their districts, responding to calls for service, conducting preliminary investigations, investigating traffic-related incidents, writing reports, pursuing and detaining suspects, and making arrests
• Preparing for and attending court appearances
• Working with other police department units as well as other local, state and federal entities
