The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority will join Leander Mayor Chris Fielder for an Aug. 19 open house meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. discussing Capital Metro transportation in Leander.

Visitors can attend the event at Leander City Hall at 200 W. Willis Street.

Capital Metro owns Leander Station Park & Ride and runs bus service as well as passenger trains from Mondays through Fridays between Leander and Austin. The Wednesday meeting will include discussion about the city’s potential for new or improved transit services, said Todd Hemingson, Capital Metro vice president of strategic planning and development. Participants can also discuss how to shape Leander’s growth to support transit services, Hemingson said.

“As we’ve seen, with such rapid growth comes significant mobility challenges and we believe that public transportation has a key role to play in addressing those challenges,” he said.

The station’s proximity to the future Austin Community College campus north of Hero Way will also factor into Capital Metro’s plans for Leander, Hemingson said. The campus property and Leander Station are located within the city’s transit-oriented development, or TOD, district. City leaders have established particular zoning restrictions within portions of the TOD district to promote a vision of urban mixed-use development within walking distance of the station.

“With catalysts like the ACC campus coming to fruition, there are opportunities to leverage these public investments with private investment to yield a walkable, transit-supportive development pattern in the area,” Hemingson said.
