The Southlake Police Department will have school resource officers at every Carroll ISD campus this year, a response in part to the 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

The City Council was told at its Aug. 6 meeting that there were initially 54 applicants for the jobs, created as a result of a citywide task force led by Mayor John Terrell that convened after the Sandy Hook shootings.

Southlake Police Department has three school resource officers who were already in schools: Blas Hernandez at Carroll Senior High; Allen Smith, Carroll High and Brett Wilson, Carroll Middle School.

New officers and their assignments:

Carroll Elementary—Robert Slusser, 20-year veteran of the Texas Department of Public Safety

Old Union Elementary—Richard Gallaway, 31 years on the Fort Worth Police Department including 10 years on the SWAT team

Johnson Elementary—Cheryl Womack, veteran of the Colleyville department and a former school resource officer for Grapevine-Colleyville ISD.

Walnut Grove Elementary—Frank LaGrassa, veteran of the Fort Worth Police Department.

Durham Intermediate—Matthew Petrie, 20-year Grapevine Police Department veteran
