[Updated to include changes to meeting dates and proposal timetable announced at Oct. 4 PISD boundary information meeting.]

Pflugerville ISD is holding a series of community meetings to discuss plans for redrawing district boundaries to prepare for the opening of Cele Middle School.

PISD spokeswoman Amanda Brim said families impacted by changes were notified via a letter and invited to take part in the meetings to learn about the boundary proposals and give district officials feedback.

The first community forum took place Oct. 2 at Dessau Middle School. The meeting Oct. 4 takes place in the cafeteria at Kelly Lane Middle School, 18900 Falcon Pointe Blvd. at 7 p.m. Brim said the community forums offer parents an opportunity to give feedback and solicit ideas.

"Anytime you are considering changing boundaries, we recognize that represents a change for families," Brim said. "The consistent feedback you hear is, 'I don't want my child to have to change schools.'"

Brim said the district wanted to hear from parents before making a final proposal.

"We view ourselves as partners in the education of the students," Brim said. "We want to hear from the parents and have everyone's best thinking whenever we are making decisions that impact our students."

Brim said the opening of Cele Middle School will impact some students at Westview, Parkcrest, Kelly Lane and Dessau middle schools. She said students at Pflugerville Middle School will not be impacted.

Brim said the new school was built to relieve capacity issues at existing campuses.

"All of our middle schools were either at capacity or over capacity," Brim said. "When we built Cele [Middle School], it was primarily to relieve capacity. But that also gave us a little bit of room to adjust some of the other campuses as well, to impact their enrollment so that they weren't over capacity either."

Brim said parents and residents can offer feedback or ask questions about the changes via email at [email protected]. She said all feedback will be taken into consideration.

"Until [changes are] approved, the district is always open to hearing from its stakeholders," Brim said.

Brim said the board will review the district's boundary proposal Nov.1. She said the board could vote to approve the changes Nov. 15.

Brim said only families who will be directly impacted by the change were sent notification letters.

"If you didn't get a letter at home, this is not impacting your kids," Brim said.

At the Oct. 4 meeting, district officials cancelled a proposed Oct. 8 boundary forum recommendation recap meeting, during which the district had planned to present final boundaries to affected families.

"We do not at this time plan to hold additional meetings," Brim said in a written statement on Oct. 5. "We will be updating the website with any changes to the proposal."
